Understanding Addiction

In order to recover from addiction, it’s important to understand it. So, what exactly is addiction? It’s classified as a chronic disease of the brain that is marked by the compulsive use of drugs or alcohol, despite the harmful consequences that using drugs and alcohol causes. It is considered a mental disease because of the way substances impact the brain; they actually alter its structure, which changes the way that it functions. Every time you use drugs or alcohol, your brain is impacted, and that impact can have long-lasting effects and lead to harmful, self-destructive actions.

In other words, excessive use of alcohol or drugs reprograms your brain, making you believe that you need to continue taking them, either because of the way they make you feel, or because your brain believes that you can’t function without them.

Classifying Addiction

Addiction is marked by problematic use of alcohol or drugs. This use can lead to severe mental and physical impairment. Generally, someone who exhibits two or more of the following behaviors over a 12-month period of time is considered to have an addiction:

  • A severe craving or a strong desire to use a substance.
  • Use of a substance that has a major impact on various facets of life, including obligations to family, friends, home, and work.
  • The desire to use a substance is greater than the desire to engage with other individuals.
  • Spending a significant amount of time partaking in activities that involve obtaining a substance, using it, and recovering from the effects after using it.
  • Using greater amounts of the substance over a period of time that is longer than originally intended.
  • A desire to cut back or stop using a substance, however, efforts to reduce or stop using are unsuccessful.
  • Continued use of drugs or alcohol in situations that could lead to physical harm (drinking and driving, using drugs while operating heavy machinery, etc.)
  • An increased tolerance to a substance – the need to use more of a substance in order to experience its effects.
  • The development of withdrawal symptoms when a substance is not taken.

If any of the above apply to you, you more than likely are suffering from an addiction, and it may be time to consider seeking treatment at a drug and alcohol rehab center.

The Process of Rehab

The specific steps that are involved in the process of rehab vary and are largely dependent on a number of factors, including the type of substance that is being used, the severity of the addiction and additional mental disorders. Based on these factors, a customized treatment plan is designed for the individual. However, while certain elements of rehab may differ for each person, generally, all patients will go through a process that has similar key elements. The rehab process usually includes:

  • Intake, during which an assessment is taken and a thorough physical exam and mental health evaluation is conducted. The intake process allows clinicians to gain a better understanding of each patient and his or her addiction so that an effective treatment program can be devised.
  • Detoxification (detox,) or the process of allowing the drugs or alcohol exit the symptom in a safe and comfortable environment. During detox, many patients experience withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms can be uncomfortable and even dangerous, but with 24-hour supervision and the right care, these symptoms can be safely monitored and treated.
  • Rehabilitation, which involves various therapies and activities that aim to treat an addiction. Individual and group counseling, educational lectures, and various therapeutic techniques are involved in the rehabilitation process. The goal is to help patients understand their addiction, including what caused it and why they continue using a substance, as well as how they can work toward overcoming it.
  • Aftercare, the process of ongoing support after completing rehabilitation. Patients continue to attend programs and receive support that will help them continue abstaining from using a substance so that they can remain sober.

At Desert Cove Recovery, we use a holistic approach for treating addiction. We ensure that each and every patient we work with receives truly customized care and receives the direct support that is needed in order to overcome their addiction and attain sobriety.
